Black Finishes — Black Rhodium & Ruthenium Plating
Deep, dramatic dark finishes for pieces that make a statement.
Black rhodium and black ruthenium plating produce rich, dark gray-to-black surfaces prized in luxury jewelry, watch components, and high-end hardware.
Both are members of the platinum group of metals. They deposit a hard, dark, corrosion-resistant layer with a distinctive depth of color that ranges from gunmetal gray to near-true black depending on the metal and process. Both are applied over an appropriate underplate for adhesion and color consistency.

Specifications
Black rhodium produces a darker, more decorative finish and, like standard rhodium, is applied thin. Black ruthenium is harder and more wear-resistant, making it the better choice for pieces that see handling. A bright nickel or palladium underplate is standard. As with all thin precious-metal decorative finishes, high-wear items may need periodic renewal, which we offer as a service.
Pricing
Black finishes start at our $500 minimum and are quoted per project after a photo review, since they use platinum-group metals. See pricing details.
