Gold Plating for Electronics: Connectors, Contacts and PCBs
Gold is the standard for separable electrical contacts because it does not oxidize, solders cleanly, and keeps contact resistance low over thousands of mating cycles. From our Vista lab we plate connectors, contact pins, PCB features and bus hardware for Southern California electronics builders.
Challenges Gold Plating Solves in Electronics
Fretting and oxide failure at contact interfaces
Tin and bare copper contacts grow resistive oxide films that cause intermittent faults — the worst kind of field failure to diagnose. Gold over a nickel barrier eliminates the oxide mechanism at the mating surface.
Solderability loss in stored inventory
Boards and terminals that sat in a drawer for a year often will not wet. A gold finish preserves solderability through long storage, protecting the value of built inventory.
Diffusion and porosity from skipped underplating
Gold plated directly on copper fails early as copper migrates through the deposit. Proper nickel underplating is not optional, and it is built into how we quote electronics work.
What We Plate
- Connector bodies and shells
- Contact pins, sockets and terminals
- PCB edge connectors and pads
- Bus bars and power distribution hardware
- RF connectors and shields
- Battery contacts and spring fingers
- Test-fixture probes and interface boards
Standards & Compliance
Electronics plating callouts usually reference ASTM B488 deposit types and classes or legacy MIL-G-45204 language, alongside IPC guidance for board-level finishes — specifications we are familiar with and plate to when your drawing requires them. Nickel underplating per common industry practice is our default recommendation for copper-alloy contacts; if your spec sets thickness in micro-inches, that is exactly how we will quote it.
Key Benefits
Low, stable contact resistance
Gold mating surfaces stay conductive across mating cycles, vibration and humidity where tin degrades.
No oxidation, ever
Gold does not form insulating oxides, so connections made today behave the same years from now.
Excellent solderability
Gold-finished terminals wet reliably even after extended storage, reducing rework at assembly.
Corrosion protection in harsh environments
With a continuous nickel barrier underneath, plated contacts shrug off salt air and industrial atmospheres.
An Example Scenario
Consider an example: a Carlsbad hardware startup discovers its custom copper battery contacts are failing humidity testing with rising resistance. They send us photos and a drawing, we quote nickel underplate plus hard gold at the thickness their test spec requires, and the reworked contacts pass qualification — without the six-week queue a large plating house quoted.
Why Our Lab for Your Electronics Work
Electronics builders in San Diego and Orange County get something the big contract platers do not offer: proximity. Drop parts at our Vista lab off CA-78, get engineering-level answers on underplating and thickness by phone at (760) 458-3299, and turn prototypes in days. We handle first articles through recurring production lots at $100 per square inch with a $500 minimum.
