Silver Plating

The most conductive finish we offer.

Silver plating puts a thin layer of pure silver over another metal for electrical performance, thermal transfer, lubricity, or a brilliant decorative surface. It is the go-to for bus bars, contacts, and radio-frequency components — and for tableware and art.

Silver has the highest electrical and thermal conductivity of any element, which makes it the preferred finish wherever current or heat needs to move efficiently. It is also naturally lubricious and anti-galling, and it takes a brilliant polish for decorative work.

Properties & Benefits

Peak conductivity

The highest electrical and thermal conductivity of any metal — the benchmark contact and bus-bar finish.

Natural lubricity

Resists galling and seizing on mating parts, especially at high temperature.

Brilliant finish

A polishable decorative surface with antimicrobial characteristics.

Practical thickness range

Typical deposits of 0.0001 inch to 0.0005 inch depending on use.

Best For

Specifications

For conductivity and lubricity, silver is often plated directly onto the base metal, unless an undercoating such as a nickel strike is needed for adhesion on certain alloys. For decorative work, a bright nickel underplate gives the silver its shine. Silver does tarnish through sulfide exposure, but at electrical contact points the conductivity remains excellent; where tarnish is a concern, we can apply an anti-tarnish treatment or a rhodium flash.

Pricing

Silver plating starts at our $500 minimum and is quoted firm at $100 per square inch after a photo review. Larger precious-metal jobs are confirmed against current silver spot pricing. See pricing details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Silver tarnish (a sulfide film) has minimal effect on conductivity at contact pressure, so silver remains the best-performing contact finish for many applications. Anti-tarnish options are available for appearance-sensitive parts.
