Proposition 65, officially the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, requires California businesses to provide warnings about significant exposures to chemicals listed by the state. Electroplated finishes commonly include a nickel underplate beneath the final gold or chrome layer, and chromium compounds are used in chrome plating and in the chromate passivates applied to zinc-plated parts. Nickel (metallic) and nickel compounds are listed under Proposition 65 as causing cancer; hexavalent chromium compounds are listed as causing cancer and reproductive harm.
